A Healthy Firewood Rack-Top Five things to check before winter comes
Posted in Uncategorized by adminWith heavy snows still not dropped in most places, I thought I would write about the ten things you should check before winter fully comes.
Doing these things now will save you problems later or the task being made harder due to deep snow.
Firewood is neatly stacked, if you still have wood in piles on the floor. Nows your last chance to get it stacked away before winter fully hits. Stacking your Firewood is a massive benefit, First it raises the firewood high above the snow line for easy access. Making sure it is neatly stacked i.e. Secure will also prevent the stack from collapsing during the winter. Either due to the weight of snow or from you removing wood. Re stacking firewood is never pleasant in the depth of winter
Ensure your Firewood is protected, make sure the wood has a good firewood cover. I prefer the custom built firewood covers as they are easier to open in winter and provide a good protection to the wood. Otherwise use a tarp, make sure it is secured by rope in 4 of the corners. For the front of the tarp I tie the corners to a log, this makes it easy to access as I can put the log on the top of the stack and remove my firewood. I also don’t have to fiddle with knots, that can either be frozen or difficult to untie with gloves on.
Ensure your wood is off the ground. Preferably your firewood is sat in a firewood rack a good 3-4 inches off the floor so that air can get underneath but also to prevent the wood from getting damp. It is also important during early winter where snow flurries fall then melt. During this time you can get a lot of water around the base of your firewood stack.
Kindling and Paper. Check that you have a good selection of kindling ready to burn. Having all those big logs is great but your going to need smaller stuff to get the fire going. Old Twigs and branches are ideal, failing that that a couple of logs and split them down further until they are small enough to burn. I typically put these into Boxes and store them in the garage ready for the fire.
A small stack indoors or near the door. As the temperature outside drops your log will start to freeze and any moisture within them will be locked up. Having a supply inside the home preferably near the fire will help warm the logs. It will also help remove the last of the moisture from them. This will help the wood light quickly and generate a good heat from your fire.
These things can be small tasks but are a lot easier done now than later when you HAVE to do it.
I have been chopping wood and enjoying the outdoors all my life. I live in Montreal and love the winter and the snow. It brings it challenges when it comes to heating, I try and help people by writing articles on improving their Fires and Firewood knowledge. For more info click on my sites.
